Stand Against Racism

The anti-immigrant racism we're reading so much about in Arizona flared into actual violence last week at our own affiliate's offices in Seattle. Marcelas Owens, an 11-year-old member of the group, said "I know we're on the right track because they wouldn't do things like this if we weren't as powerful as we are."

We *are* powerful when we stand together against violence and hate. The march for immigrant rights went forward as planned (see photo above).

Join us in sending a message to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer that real immigration reform doesn't include racial profiling and unjust search and seizure.

HELP US FIGHT RACIZM:
Dear Governor Brewer,

We, the undersigned, urge you to fully repeal SB 1070. This law creates the opportunity for unprecedented racial profiling and will further enflame racist sentiment in your state and around the country. In fact, it already has. Last week, one of the affiliate offices of USAction in Seattle was vandalized and attacked by a Nazi hate group because of their support of immigration reform. SB 1070, the law you signed last week, is fueling this hate and emboldening radical hate groups everywhere to come out of the woodwork.

And already your state is feeling the effects of this bill. University of Arizona President Robert Shelton says, "The families of a number of out-of-state students (to date all of them honors students) have told us that they are changing their plans and will be sending their children to universities in other states," and that members of the UA staff and faculty have expressed serious concerns over unwanted search and seizure by Arizona police forces.

Arizona is better than this. Our country is better than this. Our communities, from Washington state to the Florida coasts, demand better than this. Yes, we need immigration reform but not at the expense of our freedom.

Please repeal SB 1070.

Thank you,
