The same banks we bailed out with taxpayer money are planning to pay themselves billions in bonuses while record numbers of Americans are still unemployed.

But President Obama can get our money back and stop these outrageous bonuses by enacting a new tax on banks. France and Britain are already taxing them, and enacting a similar levy on banks in the U.S. could raise enough money to pay back everything we loaned Wall Street and still invest in green jobs, education and infrastructure.

Dear President Obama,

I have just learned that you are considering a new tax on big banks to offset the continuing debt incurred by the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). I am writing to encourage you to pursue the idea of a bank tax and to expand your thinking to include more banks and bonuses so that we can also invest in putting Americans back to work.

Britain and France are enacting new taxes along these lines that are expected to raise in excess of $500 million per year for each country. If we enacted your proposal in tandem with these ideas -- like a 50 percent tax on bonuses over $1 million -- we could quickly recoup the approximately $120 billion in outstanding TARP funds and still have plenty left over to invest in job creation, education and infrastructure improvements.

Public anger at Wall Street’s unfettered greed is at an all-time high. And with other major nations moving forward with taxes on banks and bonuses, now is the time for the U.S. to do the same. Please consider permanent new taxes on these bailed-out banks that will repay the $120 billion TARP debt and raise at least $500 million per year.
